The PC-DVD Guide -> DVD-ROM Installation

ALREADY INSTALLED ?

You may have purchased a computer with a DVD-ROM drive already installed, and you're thinking to yourself, "I don't need to read this section". Well, maybe so, but I think you can still learn a few new things here. The sections that may be relevant to you are the SETTING THE DMA OPTION and CHECKING DRIVE'S REGION SETTINGS

INSTALLING THE DRIVE

The DVD-ROM drive is pretty easy to install. If you've ever installed a Hard Disk Drive or a CD-ROM drive, then you'll be an expert at installing your brand-new DVD-ROM drive. Instead of listing a comprehensive step-by-step guide, I'll just briefly run through some tips that may help you.

#TIP 1 : It is usually good practice to set your DVD-ROM drive as the Secondary Master if possible. This means that your primary hard-disk drive should be connected to the IDE-1 (or IDE-0) port on your motherboard while your DVD-ROM should be connected using a separate cable to the IDE-2 (or IDE-1) port on your motherboard. You might also need to set the drive as a master by altering some jumpers on the back, please consult your instruction manual for more details.

#TIP 2 : If you primarily use the DVD-ROM in a Windows 95/98 environment, do not have any legacy DOS drivers installed for your DVD-ROM drive (as this may decrease performance and stability). To find out if you have any drivers listed in your autoexec.bat or config.sys, open up Windows Notepade, manually open these two files and put the word REM (with a spacing at the end) before the suspected drivers which usually look something like this :

config.sys
DEVICE=C:\CDPRO\VIDE-CDD.SYS /D:MSCD001

autoexec.bat
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001

#TIP 3 : The exact model / brand of your DVD-ROM drive should be listed under device manager. To check, follow the instructions here.

#TIP 4 : Your DVD-ROM drive should be assigned to be your "first drive". Meaning that it's drive letter (usually d: or e: ) should follow on directly from the drive letter(s) of your hard-disk drive(s) (starting at c: ). Any other devices should have their drive letters after your DVD-ROM drive letter.

#TIP 5 : DMA should be enabled if possible. Instructions to do so are here.
