Sony has officially announced that the hugely popular PS4 game console has topped the 10 million units sold milestone worldwide.
Sony made the announcement at Gamescom 2014, and the 10 million figure is especially impressive given that the total units sold figure stood at only 5.3 million in February.
The PS4 has been leading the Xbox One and all other consoles for every month in 2014 in the key U.S. market that was once dominated by the Wii, and then by the Xbox 360. The PS4's lower pricing and superior hardware performance has seen it become a gamer favorite against a Xbox One console that, up until a couple of months ago, was $100 more expensive.
This, plus the fact that the PS4 is available in more market worldwide, has allowed the PS4 to build up a considerable lead in sales globally, none more so than in Australia, where the PS4 has outsold the Xbox One by a two-to-one margin. Globally, the Xbox One has shipped 5 million units as of April, according to Microsoft.
