Microsoft officially launched the new Zune HD today and announced upcoming plans for a huge library of apps, games, and streaming HD video to the XBOX 360 as well as the ability to purchase or rent content.
The release of the new HD media player also brought with it an update to the Zune software, which is now up to 4.0. After you have downloaded and synced the new 4.0 firmware, you'll enjoy the new "Smart DJ" features (which is similar to iTunes Genius) and a new Quickplay menu to access your favorite media.
The Zune HD comes with a new OLED screen and will send HD video to a HDTV using the new Zune AV dock (sold separately of course).
You will now be able to rent or buy HD content from the Zune Marketplace then sync that content to a Zune HD and take it with you to play back on a large screen HD TV in the home or on the road.
"Later this year, Zune plans to release free applications such as Twitter for Zune and Facebook for Zune, in addition to fun 3-D games such as "Project Gotham Racing: Ferrari Edition," "Vans Sk8: Pool Service" and "Audiosurf(TM) Tilt." Games can be added to Zune HD via Zune Marketplace over the Wi-Fi connection or when connected to the Zune PC software."
The 16GB Zune HD, which will come in black, will cost you $219.99 while the 32GB, which will come in platinum, will cost you $289.99.
