The Blu-ray Disc Association has just approved a new format, BDXL, of Blu-ray discs that increases its total storage capacity from 50GB to 128GB (Re-writable will be 100GB) but unfortunately is not backwards compatible with older hardware.
The new disk technology goes three to four layers deep on the disk, and a more powerful laser will be required to read it properly. That is the reason for having to upgrade your hardware.
Its still unclear what applications will use this new high capacity disc but, it has nothing to do with the 3D phenomenon thats currently going on.
