The iOS 4.1 Software Update is the first major update to iOS 4, bringing Game Center, new iTunes features, high dynamic range photography, and more.

iOS 4 works with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G but, not all of the new features iOS 4.1 brings are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS.
