Comcast started off this week be launching Xfinity TV, a free app that allows the iPad and iPhone to function as a remote to their DVR.

One of the perks is it doesn't require WiFi to work.  It will work on 3G as long as you have a Comcast ID.

The app is universal and works with "compatible" Comcast set-top boxes, though the cable provider hasn't said what which ones that might be.

Android users will get their equivalent of the remote control app before the end of the year.
