Microsoft's Kinect accessory for the Xbox 360 is now officially the fastest selling consumer electronics device in history

Microsoft's Kinect accessory has officially become the best "fastest-selling consumer electronics device" in the world, according to the Guinness Book of Records, based on the fact that it sold 8 million units in the first 60 days of sales. Guinness conducted its own independent research to confirm the fact that Kinect outsold devices like the iPhone or iPad in the same 60 day period.

Meanwhile, Microsoft now also states that 10 million Kinect units have been "sold" since the launch of the device in early November through to the end of February, although this number most likely represents "shipped to retailer" numbers, as opposed to actual "sales to consumers", a number Microsoft previously stated that they did not track.

Regardless, this is seen as a huge success for Microsoft, who previously only expected 5 million shipped units during the first 60 days.

Microsoft also released figures showing that 10 million Kinect games has been sold to date, not including the free Kinect Adventures game bundled with the accessory. The 1:1 attach rate can be seen as low, although it is similar to that of the Wii, and the attach rate of console accessories will always be lower than the attach rate associated with fully fledged consoles.
