The results and analysis for Blu-ray (and DVD) sales for the week ending 1st October 2011 is in. With the Star Wars fever just dying down slightly, a new A-list release this week helped to keep market share high (even though it's down slightly from last week). Transformers: Dark of the Moon was the week's best selling BD title, clearly outselling last week's number one, Bridesmaids, by nearly a 10 to 1 margin.
Comparing this week's results to the same week last year, in which Iron Man 2 was released. Both Iron Man 2 and Transformers 2 had similar box office receipts, and so it was interesting that, even with the Star Wars effect, Blu-ray's revenue only rose $2M (7%) in between these two releases and exactly one year's worth of growth for the format. And combined revenue actually fell by more than $25M, with DVD revenue continue to fall. Is digital distribution worth $28M more than the same week a year ago? If not, then the industry's overall revenue is declining, and perhaps the economy is to blame.
