The results and analysis for Blu-ray (and DVD) sales for the week ending 26th November 2011 is in. This is a more important week than normal, since this is the Black Friday sales week, where revenue goes through the roof thanks to enthusiast shoppers and retailer discounts. The only notable new release was Super 8, and it didn't sell enough copies to become the best selling Blu-ray title of the week (although it did well enough on Blu-ray, compared to DVD sales).
Black Friday 2011 is a disappointment compared to Black Friday 2010, at least in terms of combined disc sales. With losses of more than $55 million, compared to the same week last year, the bigger disappointment was the relatively low gain for the Blu-ray format. With BF 2011 recording only $4.2m more revenue on Blu-ray than BF 2010, the year-on-year growth is below the average set so far in 2011, and did little to help with the losses enjoyed by the DVD format. Perhaps this year's discounts were just not that enticing to buyers!
