The results and analysis for Blu-ray (and DVD) sales for the week ending 27th December 2014 is in. No new releases this week while the pre and post Christmas sales was still going on. Both Blu-ray and DVD revenue fell compared to the same week last year (although only slightly), and with Blu-ray revenue declining a bit faster, weekly Blu-ray revenue fell as well.
With the sales data now complete for the 52 weeks of 2014, Blu-ray revenue has actually fell in 2014 compared to 2013, the first time that revenue has fallen since the format's inception in 2006. The transition to digital appears to be hurting Blu-ray for the first time, as HD becomes more of a viable option on digital platforms, and more of a competitor to Blu-ray, due to improvements in codec efficiency, quality and pricing (you can read our full yearly analysis of Blu-ray sales data here).
