Analysis firm IHS has provided data that shows 4K Ultra HD TVs accounted for 11% of all LCD TV shipments in March.
Shipment of 4K TVs were up 53% from February to 2.6 million units, making March a record breaking month for 4K TV sales. Overall LCD TV sales rose by 20% from February to March, resulting in 23.9 million units shipped.
The sluggish sales results in February had some worried about slowing LCD demand, but Yoonsung Chung, director of large area display research for IHS, says new consumer technologies such as 4K and wide color gamut will help shipment growth in the future.
“Although the LCD TV panel demand has shown signs of slowing after the holidays, leading TV brands are preparing their new models for launch, so orders are not diminished,” said Yoonsung Chung, director of large area display research for IHS. “Meanwhile, panel makers are aggressively introducing 4K resolution, wide color gamut, ultra-slim bezels and other new features, to improve panel shipment growth.”
Data shows that the most popular LCD panel size in March was 40-inches, followed by 23.6-inch screens that are popular in emerging markets.
