Nintendo's latest console, the Switch, is off to a solid start according to new data released by the company.

4.7 million Switch consoles have already been sold in the first four months of sales, making it one of Nintendo's best selling consoles to date.

The 4.7 million figure is still dwarfed by the 5.84 million Wii consoles sold during the same period or the 5.27 million units sold for the hugely popular DS handheld console, but it was substantially above the Wii U's 3.45 million.

The Wii U is considered by critics and gamers to be a relative failure for Nintendo, with the company bringing out the successor Switch much earlier than anticipated given the average lifespan of a game console.

The Switch, on the other hand, has been warmly received by critics and fans alike.

Game sales for the Switch was also strong, according to Nintendo. The most popular game so far, 'The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild' (which was originally a Wii U only release), managed to sell 3.92 million copies, ahead of the 3.54 million copies sold for 'Mario Kart 8 Deluxe'.
