SVOD and other OTT services will have to rely on local content and ease of use to maintain or even accelerate their growth plans, according to new data from Vindicia, a company that provides subscription billing services.
Research, carried out on behalf of Vindicia by research firm MTM, found that OTT services will be seeing tremendous growth in almost all key markets, and found that "exclusive content, appropriate pricing and seamless payment solutions" are all key to maintaining the growth.
In Australia, for example, the research found that despite being already one of the largest OTT markets in the Asia Pacific, it is set to grow by 50 percent from 2017 to 2020.
During the same period, OTT revenue is predicted to grow by nearly $4 billion in the US.
SVOD providers, in particular Netflix, have already produced many localized content originally aimed at a specific market, but also shared with other markets to boost their exclusive offerings.
"As revenue for premium OTT services increase in all regions and the global players continue to dominate, a common thread to this research is that consumers will nevertheless choose to subscribe to niche content when the price and the experience are right," said Kris Nagel, head of Vindicia.
"Premium OTT services that offer local, live and linear content, and that can also seamlessly integrate with payment platforms to make payments almost invisible to the user, can expect strong subscription growth going forward."
